New Delhi: The Ministry of Coal on Thursday announced the commencement of scientific coal mining operations in Meghalaya, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to formalise and regulate coal extraction in the North-East.

Two coal blocks — Saryngkham A in East Jaintia Hills and Pyndengshahlang in West Khasi Hills — have begun production after securing the necessary permissions. The Saryngkham A coal block received opening permission on March 10 and started production on June 3. The Pyndengshahlang block was cleared for opening on May 2 and began operations on June 5.
The ministry said this milestone reflects its commitment to fostering safe, legal, and environmentally sound mining practices in the region. This shift toward scientific mining is expected to reduce illegal mining and environmental degradation, while enabling Meghalaya and other North-Eastern states to contribute meaningfully to the country’s energy needs.
The Ministry of Coal urged all state governments in the region to cooperate in advancing scientific coal mining and facilitating coal evacuation. It said that with sustained support from the states, the North-East can play a vital role in ensuring India’s energy security and driving economic development in one of the country’s most resource-rich but underdeveloped regions.

The announcement follows a long-standing push by the central government to bring Meghalaya’s coal mining industry — previously marred by illegal and unsafe practices — under a regulatory framework through transparent processes, environmental safeguards, and improved worker safety standards.
