MEIL completes largest single concrete pour for PHWR at NPCIL's Kaiga plant

MEIL pours 7,250 cubic metres of concrete in single operation at Kaiga Units 5 and 6, its first nuclear sector assignment

New Delhi: Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) announced on Monday that it has carried out one of the largest single concrete pours in the history of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), as part of the pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) programme at the Kaiga Units 5 and 6 nuclear power project in Karnataka.

Nearly 7,250 cubic metres poured in continuous operation

The exercise involved placing approximately 7,250 cubic metres of concrete, with a rebar density of 360 kg per cubic metre, in a single continuous pour. A release from the Hyderabad-based infrastructure major described the milestone as significant both for the Kaiga Units 5 and 6 project and for MEIL, for which this marks its first assignment in the nuclear sector.

The company said executing a pour of this scale on a maiden nuclear project reflects its engineering capability, planning rigour and execution strength in a sector regarded as among the most demanding in infrastructure construction.

Large multi-shift workforce deployed

To complete the pour safely and on schedule, MEIL deployed a large workforce operating across multiple shifts. According to the release, hundreds of engineers, supervisors, quality professionals, surveyors, technicians, operators, safety personnel and skilled workmen worked around the clock, showing what the company called exceptional commitment and resilience in the face of difficult weather conditions and several operational challenges.

The statement added that strict safety protocols were maintained throughout the operation, with all quality checks and tests carried out in accordance with nuclear-sector requirements to ensure the structural integrity and long-term performance of the pour.
