New Delhi: Electricity consumers will be able to avail at least 300 units of free electricity through rooftop solarisation, said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday while presenting the interim Budget 2024-25. Referring to the Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana, under which the government wants to install rooftop solar power systems on 1 crore houses across India, the Finance Minister said, "One crore households will be enabled to obtain up to 300 units free electricity every month. This scheme follows the resolve of Prime Minister on the historic day of consecration of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya."

Rooftop solar installations will enable savings of Rs 15,000-18,000 annually

Explaining the benefits of the scheme, Sitharaman said that savings of up to Rs 15,000 to 18,000 annually for households from free solar electricity and selling the surplus to the distribution companies will accrrue as a result of the solarisation of rooftops.

The scheme will provide entrepreneurship opportunities for a large number of vendors for supply and installation, said the minister. Employment opportunities for the youth with technical skills in manufacturing, installation and maintenance will get created, she added.
