New Delhi: NTPC Limited, India’s largest power producer, was in talks with prospective buyers in Japan, South Korea and Germany for green ammonia and other low-carbon fuels, Chairman Gurdeep Singh said on Tuesday. Singh was speaking at an event organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce. He said the conversations with overseas customers were under way as NTPC developed a proposed green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh.

The Andhra Pradesh project is expected to produce green ammonia and green methanol rather than hydrogen alone. Both fuels are considered more practical than hydrogen for transportation and international trade, which makes them the likelier products for overseas buyers.
Singh made clear that NTPC’s priorities were changing. “We have to make hydrogen a business,” he said. The focus, he added, was moving away from pilot projects and towards ventures that could stand on their own commercially.
His remarks reflected a wider effort by Indian companies to lock in demand. They are trying to turn the government’s hydrogen ambitions into commercially viable projects. That search for buyers came at a time when developers worldwide have struggled to secure the long-term offtake agreements needed to underpin large-scale investment.
India has laid out plans to become a major green hydrogen producer. Backed by subsidies of roughly Rs 19,744 crore, the government aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen a year by 2030.

Demand for green fuels has been forecast to rise. Industries are looking for alternatives to fossil fuels to cut emissions and meet their decarbonisation targets.
