The government launched the scheme in February 2024 with a target of installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households by 2026-27.
Joshi said scaling rooftop solar to one crore households could significantly boost renewable electricity generation and reduce emissions. It has been estimated that rooftop solar systems in one crore households may generate 1,000 billion units (BU) of renewable electricity, which may lead to a reduction of 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the 25-year lifetime of these systems, he said.
The minister added that the milestone reflects broader clean energy efforts.
“From reducing electricity bills to strengthening energy security, this achievement reflects the scale and speed of India's green transformation under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Joshi said.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to promote distributed renewable energy by enabling households to install rooftop solar systems with central support.
The scheme forms part of the government’s push to expand renewable capacity, reduce emissions and enhance energy security through decentralised solar generation.
