Kolkata: Coal India Ltd (CIL) has revised its production target for the current fiscal year, aiming for a realistic figure of 806-810 million tonnes (MT), down from the previously set 838 MT, Chairman PM Prasad said on Friday. Acknowledging that achieving the previously set target of 838 MT would be difficult, the Chairman said that the revised production target is 'realistic.'
As of December 2024, Coal India has managed to increase its production by 2.2 percent, reaching 543 MT. Despite this, the company remains focused on boosting production further in the final quarter to achieve a growth rate of 4-5 percent by the end of the fiscal year, the CIL Chairman was quoted as saying by PTI.
Prasad expressed confidence that Coal India’s subsidiaries, including Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL), and Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), are on track to meet their production goals. He also noted that Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) is hopeful of reaching its target, although the performance of South Eastern Coalfields Ltd’s (SECL) mega mines over the next 75 days will be crucial in meeting the overall production expectation.
Prasad also highlighted the strong performance of captive and commercial coal mines, which recorded a 30 percent growth in production by December 2024, further supporting India’s domestic coal supply.
Coal India is working towards reducing India’s reliance on thermal coal imports. The company reported a 3.1 percent decline in coal imports for the period from April to December 2024, with total imports reaching 149.39 MT.
