New Delhi: State-run Coal India Ltd (CIL) is set to bring in a dress code for all of its employees, starting right from the Chairman to Directors, officers and workmen soon, PSU Watch learnt from sources. While the dress code for male employees will consist of navy blue pants and sky blue shirts, for women employees, the dress code will be maroon kurta or saree and black blouse or salwar and dupatta. The colour palette was finalised by a committee that has been formed to bring in a dress code for all of Coal India’s employees and workmen. The committee had its first meeting in New Delhi on March 2, during which it decided the colours of the uniform, the quality of fabrics, and the allowance that will be made available to employees for buying uniforms and laundry services, said two sources aware of the development.

To maintain a standard quality of clothing, the committee tasked with finalising a dress code for CIL employees has also shortlisted a few well-known brands from where employees will be required to buy their uniforms. These include, Raymond, Ramraj Cotton, Arvind Limited, Louis Philippe, Vardhman, Blackberrys, Trident India and a few other brands, sources said. The next meeting of the committee will take place in Kolkata on April 7. The meeting’s agenda will be to finalise a draft for implementing the dress code, which will then be forwarded to the Board of Directors of CIL for its approval, said sources. The dress code is expected to be rolled out in the first week of July, said one of the two sources.

Explaining the rationale behind the move, one of the sources quoted above said, “The company has completed 50 years of its foundation. And it is keen to enhance the brand image of the company and to bring in a corporate culture that exhibits professionalism.” Coal India has 2.28 lakh employees as of March 31, 2024.
