New Delhi: Engineers India Limited (EIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to provide engineering services for the conceptual design and development of structures, systems, and components of the Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR), the company said in a statement on Thursday.

The MoU was executed by EIL Director (Commercial) Atul Gupta and NPCIL Director (Technical) Rajiv Agarwal in the presence of EIL Chairperson and Managing Director Vartika Shukla, NPCIL Chairman and Managing Director BC Pathak, and senior management from both organisations at NPCIL’s Mumbai office on August 12.
EIL, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, provides end-to-end project services across a range of industrial sectors. NPCIL, a public sector enterprise under the Department of Atomic Energy, is engaged in setting up and operating nuclear power plants across India.
According to the statement, the partnership supports the government’s vision to accelerate nuclear power as a clean, green, and reliable energy source, strengthening the country’s energy security. It is also a step towards the Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat, which aims to achieve 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.

BSMRs are modified versions of India’s existing Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PWHR). Three types of SMRs — 200 MWe, 55 MWe SMR and 5 MWth High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor, for the production of hydrogen — are being designed and developed indigenously. They will be fuelled by “slightly enriched uranium” and are being jointly designed and developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and NPCIL.
