New Delhi: Engineers India Ltd (EIL) has signed a contract worth more than USD 450 million with Nigeria's Dangote Group, the company said on Tuesday. Under it, EIL will act as project management consultant (PMC) and as engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) consultant for a new refinery and petrochemical plant in Kenya. The greenfield project will process 700,000 barrels per day (bpd).

EIL, which works under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, said Dangote was setting up the plant "to meet regional demand and process a wider crude basket." Once completed, the company said, the project "will be critical in strengthening fuel production within East Africa, reducing reliance on imports, and supporting regional energy security." It added that the plant would also supply petroleum products to the global market.
The Kenya contract follows EIL's work on Dangote's refinery and petrochemical complex in the Lekki Free Zone in Nigeria. EIL was PMC and EPCM consultant for that 650,000 bpd complex, which is successfully commissioned. EIL is now working on the complex's expansion to 1.4 million bpd.
According to the statement, the Lekki complex is the world's largest single-train refinery. It produces Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and polypropylene.
EIL said the new award reflected its record on that project. "This Contract is a strong affirmation of the trust reposed in EIL's capabilities to deliver projects of exceptional scale and complexity," the company said. It set out what it would bring to the Kenya plant. "As we move into this next phase, EIL will bring its decades of experience, multidisciplinary strengths, and global execution model to support Dangote in creating one of the world's most advanced and fully integrated energy complexes," it said.

The Dangote Group is headquartered in Lagos. According to EIL's statement, it operates in 17 African countries. Its businesses include upstream oil and gas, mining, petrochemicals, fertilisers, cement, sugar and food.
