New Delhi: HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited (HMEL) has signed two significant memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with global automation giants Emerson and AVEVA during the ongoing India Energy Week 2025 in New Delhi. “The partnerships are aimed to augment HMEL’s digital technology adaptation to wider refinery and petrochemical process units by implementing disrupting technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Advance Analytics, Real Time Optimiser to improve process efficiency, safety and sustainability,” said a statement on Wednesday.

Commenting on the occasion, Prabh Das, MD & CEO, HMEL, commented, “Process automation has been at the heart of HMEL’s strategic vision for building a smart enterprise. We are thrilled to partner with Emerson and AVEVA to develop innovative automation solutions that will boost digital transformation at HMEL.”

Pact with AVEVA would focus on AI, digital solution for smart refining: HMEL

HMEL is digital-first organisation, operating an integrated refinery-petrochemical complex ‘Guru Gobind Singh Refinery’ at Bathinda, Punjab. The refinery constitutes an 11.3 MMTPA crude oil refinery and a 1.2 MMTPA multi-feed cracker, along with 1.2 MMTPA Polyethylene (PE) and 1.0 MMTPA Polypropylene (PP) plants. “Leveraging the latest technology and partnering with the best of the partners has enabled HMEL to deliver stellar operational performance and profitability with strict adherence to safety and environmental standards,” the statement said.

The partnership with AVEVA would focus on developing Artificial Intelligence and digitalisation solution for smart refining and petrochemical operations at HMEL.

By combining AVEVA’s advanced digital solutions with HMEL’s operational expertise, we aim to drive measurable improvements in energy efficiency, sustainability, and optimise resource utilisation.”

Centre of Excellence for analytics-driven refinery transformation

There is also a plan of Establishing a Center of Excellence along with AVEVA for analytics-driven refinery transformation as well as driving long-term co-innovation initiatives and strengthening HMEL’s position as a leader in refinery digitalisation. Furthermore, the MoU with the global automation leader, Emerson has been signed on co-development of innovative solution for Energy Value chain Optimisation’ including optimization of the Oils to Chemicals supply chain for improving margins through real-time industrial data platform for enterprise-wide integration and visualisation.
