New Delhi: India’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports were up 24.1 percent in April-December period of FY2024-25 as consumption of gas increased while domestic production barely registered a growth during the period. According to official data, India imported 28,586 MMSCM of LNG during April-December period of FY25 as opposed to 23,043 MMSCM during the corresponding period a year ago. The country spent USD 11.7 billion on LNG imports in April-December period of FY25, which was 19.39 percent more than USD 9.8 billion spent during the same period a year ago.
The economy consumed 55,496 MMSCM of natural gas during the first nine months of the current fiscal, which was 11.6 percent higher year-on-year. However, during the same period, India’s domestic natural gas production increased only 0.4 percent year-on-year, deepening India’s import dependency to 51.5 percent. In the year-ago period, India’s LNG import dependency was at 46.3 percent.
LNG import for the month of December 2024 was 3,022 MMSCM which was 18.2 percent higher than the corresponding month of the previous year. Gross production of natural gas for the month of December was 3,066 MMSCM which was lower by 2.1 percent compared with the corresponding month of the previous year.
