New Delhi: The Bangladesh Power Development Board has paid Adani Power more than USD 500 million in overdue electricity bills, clearing a backlog that had been a “concern” for the Indian power producer, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) SB Khyalia said. The payments, made in late June and July, have brought the company’s receivables from the customer “to near normal levels” and restored regular payment flows.

CEO cites improvement in payment cycle

“Apart from this, we have also received more than US $500 million payment from the Bangladesh Power Development Board towards their outstanding dues in the end of June and in July. The customer has been paying us now regularly. As a result, the outstanding receivables position has now been brought to near normal level, which was so far an issue of concern,” Khyalia said during the company’s Q1 FY26 earnings call.

Background

BPDB sources 1,496 MW of electricity from Adani Power’s Godda plant in Jharkhand under a 25-year power purchase agreement signed in 2017. Payments had been delayed for months, reportedly due to a foreign currency shortage, with arrears climbing into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Adani Power had flagged the overdue payments in previous disclosures as a financial risk.

Receivables position stabilises

The recent transfers from BPDB, coupled with a shift to timely monthly payments, have sharply reduced the outstanding balance. While the company did not specify the remaining amount owed, Khyalia’s remarks suggest the receivables position is no longer an operational strain. The development comes as Adani Power looks to maintain uninterrupted power supply to Bangladesh amid rising regional demand.
