

New Delhi: NTPC’s research and development (R&D) arm NETRA will set up a plasma gasification-based green hydrogen plant at its campus in Greater Noida, as the state-run power major looks to expand its footprint in emerging clean energy technologies, the company said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

“In an effort to consolidate its footprint in the green energy space, NTPC’s R&D wing NETRA will set up a Plasma Gasification–based Green Hydrogen Plant on its campus at Greater Noida,” the company said.
According to the statement, the proposed plant has been designed to produce one tonne of green hydrogen per day. “The plant is designed to produce 1 tonne of green hydrogen per day, reflecting NTPC’s commitment towards sustainability,” it said.
The project will deploy advanced plasma gasification technology to convert waste into hydrogen. “The Advanced Plasma Gasification technology will convert waste into tar-free syngas, which will be further processed to produce hydrogen using PSA/Membrane Technology,” NTPC said.
The company added that the project will be implemented at the NETRA campus and will utilise municipal solid waste-derived refuse-derived fuel (MSW-RDF) and agricultural waste as feedstock.
NTPC said it currently contributes about one-fourth of India’s power requirements and has an installed capacity of over 85 GW, with an additional 30.90 GW under construction, including 13.3 GW of renewable energy capacity.
Reiterating its long-term targets, the company said it is “committed to achieve 149 GW by 2032, that includes 60 GW renewable energy capacity, and 244 GW by 2037”.

Alongside power generation, NTPC said it has expanded into new business areas such as e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear power and green hydrogen solutions.
