

New Delhi: India's installed non-fossil fuel electricity generation capacity crossed 300 GW as on July 31, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said in a statement on August 9, placing the country past the 60 percent mark of its 500 GW non-fossil capacity target for 2030.

The total non-fossil capacity stood at 300.50 GW, comprising 164.59 GW of solar power, 58.14 GW of wind power, 57.24 GW of hydro power (large and small), 11.75 GW of bio-power and 8.78 GW of nuclear power, according to the statement.
The share of non-fossil fuel capacity in the country's total installed electricity generation capacity, which the ministry put at around 552 GW at present, has reached over 54 percent, it said.
"Backed through the key policy enablers provided by the Government for this transformation, this monumental achievement highlights India's rapid progress towards building an Aatmanirbhar energy ecosystem and securing the target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030," the ministry said.
A record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity was installed during 2025-26, with solar power contributing 44.6 GW and wind power 6 GW, the statement said.
"The growth in clean energy generation has been anchored by stellar contributions across sectors," the ministry said, adding that solar energy "remains the key growth engine" with around 165 GW at present, up from 2.8 GW in 2014, while wind capacity has risen to over 58 GW from 21 GW in 2014.
Renewable energy generation has increased from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26, according to the ministry.
The enlisted capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar PV modules has crossed 200 GW, rising from 2.3 GW in 2014, the ministry said, attributing the expansion to the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme "focusing on the nation's solar installations with high-efficiency, indigenously produced modules."
"Clean energy transition is no longer just a climate commitment—it is central to shaping India's industrial competitiveness, energy independence, and economic resilience," the statement said.

The ministry said it is also driving industrial decarbonisation through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, "positioning India to become a global hub for the production, usage, and export of Green Hydrogen and its derivatives."
