New Delhi: Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned NHPC’s 450 MWp (DC) / 300 MW (AC) DCR-compliant solar project in Bikaner, Rajasthan, overcoming extreme desert conditions to deliver one of India’s largest renewable installations, said a statement on Monday. The company said the project will supply clean electricity to Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and is expected to generate around 17,230 million units over its lifetime.

According to the statement, the project features “advanced DCR cells and bifacial modules for optimised energy generation,” with approximately 7,75,000 modules installed across the Karnisar Bhatiyan site.
TPREL said the plant is designed to withstand the harsh climate of western Rajasthan. “Despite extreme temperatures and difficult vehicle movements, the TPREL team ensured timely completion with the deployment of advanced technologies such as DCR cells and bifacial DCR modules, precision ramming, and high-performance inverters designed to withstand extreme heat conditions,” it said. The project is expected to offset nearly 13.8 million tons of CO₂ over its lifetime.
Alongside the NHPC project, TPREL said it is also powering Rajasthan’s clean-energy expansion through DCR-compliant cells and modules for SJVN’s 1 GW project and NLC’s 300 MW project, both of which are “poised for commissioning and set to become major renewable milestones.”
The modules used in the NHPC plant were manufactured by TP Solar in Tirunelveli, supporting domestic manufacturing.
TPREL said the project generated strong socio-economic benefits, employing more than 300 local workers and developing several local vendors. The company said this has created “livelihood opportunities in the area and boosted the regional economy.”
With this commissioning, TPREL’s renewable utility capacity has reached 11.6 GW, of which 5.8 GW is operational (4.7 GW solar and 1.1 GW wind). Another 5.8 GW is at various stages of implementation and will be completed over the next 6 to 24 months.

TPREL said it has now commissioned over 4.9 GW of third-party projects, including more than 980 MW delivered in the current financial year, underscoring its execution capability.
The company said the project aligns with India’s targets of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.
