Mumbai: Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of Waaree Energies Ltd (WESSPL), has commenced operations at its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) container manufacturing facility, in what the company described as a major step towards building India's integrated energy storage manufacturing ecosystem.

Capacity uprated to 5.15 GWh

The BESS container facility has a capacity of 5.15 GWh, revised upward from an originally planned 3.5 GWh, said a statement on Thursday. The company attributed the increase to debottlenecking of production throughput and improved energy density of battery cells.

The plant is fitted with Industry 4.0 technologies, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), intelligent material handling, automated assembly lines, and advanced testing and quality assurance systems. Designed for utility-scale and commercial and industrial applications, the facility is intended to deliver reliable and scalable energy storage solutions.

First milestone in a 20 GWh roadmap

Waaree ESS said the container facility is the first milestone in a broader manufacturing roadmap of 20 GWh. In the current financial year, the company intends to operationalise 5.15 GWh of battery pack manufacturing, uprated from a planned 3.5 GWh on the same throughput and cell energy density gains, along with 3.5 GWh of lithium cell manufacturing.

Together, the company said, these facilities will build a domestic energy storage ecosystem that supports India's clean energy ambitions while reducing dependence on imported technologies.

Why storage matters for the grid

The statement underlined the growing role of storage as India scales up solar and wind capacity. BESS allows renewable power generated during the day to be stored and dispatched during peak demand, improving grid stability, cutting renewable curtailment, and lowering reliance on conventional peaking plants. The company positioned its integrated manufacturing of lithium cells, battery packs and BESS containers as supporting the government's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Rathi, Director, Waaree, said, "Battery Energy Storage Systems are the backbone of a renewable-powered future. As India accelerates its clean energy transition, reliable and domestically manufactured energy storage will be essential for ensuring grid stability, energy security, and sustainable growth."
