New Delhi: Coal production from captive, commercial and other mines in India crossed the 200-million-tonne (MT) mark on March 11 in FY 2025–26, the Ministry of Coal said in a statement on Friday. According to the ministry, the milestone reflects the contribution of central and state public sector undertakings as well as private companies operating coal blocks.

“India’s coal sector has achieved a significant milestone as Captive/Commercial & Other mines crossed the landmark of 200 Million Tonnes (MT) of coal production on March 11 during FY 2025–26,” the ministry said.
It added that the achievement “reflects the collective efforts and unwavering commitment of various Central and State Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs/SPSUs) along with private sector participants.”
Of the total production recorded so far in FY26, captive and commercial coal mines contributed 194.17 MT, while other mines produced 6.06 MT, taking the combined output beyond the 200 MT mark. The ministry said the sector has maintained strong growth momentum during the current financial year.
Coal production from these mines surpassed the entire FY25 output of 197.32 MT on March 7, reaching the milestone 24 days earlier than last year, according to the statement. Output has registered a year-on-year growth of 10.56 percent over the same period.
Coal dispatch from captive, commercial and other mines has also continued to rise during the year. According to the ministry, dispatch increased 7.71 percent year-on-year, rising from 182.98 MT to 197.09 MT, indicating the sector’s growing ability to meet domestic demand.
“This sustained rise in dispatch reflects the sector’s growing capacity to meet the country’s energy requirements while ensuring reliable coal supply to key consuming sectors,” the ministry said.
The government said it will continue to promote captive and commercial mining as part of efforts to strengthen India’s energy ecosystem. “The Ministry of Coal remains committed to further advancing captive and commercial coal mining as a key driver of India’s energy ecosystem,” the statement said.

It added that policy support, technology adoption and the contribution of the mining workforce will help expand the sector’s role in ensuring reliable energy supply and supporting industrial growth.
