Vedanta Aluminium said it expanded its renewable-energy portfolio through long-term power purchase agreements in FY25 and advanced multiple initiatives in energy conservation, process optimisation, digital interventions and resource efficiency. These measures included waste-heat recovery, improved boiler and turbine performance, deployment of energy-efficient technologies, and real-time monitoring systems to reduce consumption across plant operations.
The company said it has implemented several high-impact conservation initiatives in recent years, including its patented potlining technology that delivers 200 KWH/MT of aluminium in operational energy savings. It reported 378 million units of cumulative energy savings through sustainability measures.
Vedanta Aluminium said it formalised a strategic partnership with PwC India in 2025 to support decarbonisation, water positivity and biodiversity programmes across locations. It has also established “Communities of Practice” across carbon, water, waste, biodiversity and tailings for performance tracking and implementation.
Under its 2030 targets, Vedanta Aluminium aims for 30 percent of its product portfolio to consist of low-carbon aluminium, driven by expansion of its Restora and Restora Ultra product lines. Commenting on the company’s progress, Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond incremental improvements, it is about transforming the way aluminium is produced in India. By consuming 1.57 billion units of renewable energy this year, we are accelerating our journey towards a low-carbon future, embedding clean energy and efficiency at the core of our operations.”
The company said it has rolled out energy-efficiency training programmes across all sites to sensitise employees and strengthen adoption of best practices, aligned with ISO 50001 standards.
The company said it invested Rs 1,411 million in community programmes, including health, education, water access and livelihood initiatives. It added that it is increasing the use of biomass briquettes for co-firing at BALCO and Vedanta Lanjigarh and has signed an MoU with GAIL to supply natural gas for powering cast-house operations at Vedanta Jharsuguda.
