New Delhi: JSW Energy has placed turbine-generator orders for the whole of its 3,200 MW Salboni thermal project in West Bengal. The last of them, a 1,600 MW order for the project's second phase, was signed on Friday. Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, said the contract keeps both phases on track "at a time when critical equipment supply remains tight."

The contract is between JSW Thermal Energy Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of JSW Energy, and its associate company Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Limited. It covers two steam turbine generators (TG) of 800 MW each for Phase 2. An earlier order had covered the two 800 MW units of Phase 1. With both phases now ordered, all four units of the Salboni Thermal Power Project (TPP) are covered.
The company said the package will be manufactured and supplied in line with the project's construction schedule, "supporting timely completion and commissioning of the plant." Its reason for placing the order with an associate company was supply risk. JSW Energy said it aims to "enhance supply-chain certainty, improve coordination during execution, and reduce risks arising from industry-wide equipment shortages."
Mahendra made the same point about supply. "Our second turbine generator contract with Toshiba JSW fully secures the TG requirement for the entire 3,200 MW at Salboni, our largest single-location thermal asset, and keeps both phases firmly on track for timely completion at a time when critical equipment supply remains tight," he said.
Mahendra said the contract draws on a long relationship. "This builds on our partnership with Toshiba, which dates back to 2008," he said. It also builds, in his words, on "JSW Energy's clear right to win in thermal power: proven delivery of large sized thermal projects, a healthy balance sheet, and early securing of fuel, land, and key equipment."
He then described what the plant is meant to do. "Salboni TPP will provide reliable baseload power alongside India's renewable expansion, and it contributes directly to the nation's roadmap of adding nearly 100 GW of thermal capacity for Atmanirbhar Bharat," he said.
Salboni makes up most of the thermal capacity JSW Energy is now building. The company has 5,958 MW of thermal capacity installed and 5,000 MW under construction. Of that 5,000 MW, 3,200 MW is at Salboni and the remaining 1,800 MW is at JSW Mahanadi Power Company Limited (JMPCL).
Across thermal, hydro and renewables, the company has 15.0 GW of generation capacity in operation and 13.4 GW under construction. A further 4.0 GW is in its pipeline. Its locked-in energy storage capacity is 29.6 GWh. Of this, 26.4 GWh is pumped hydro storage and 3.2 GWh is battery energy storage. The company said this positions it "to supply firm, round-the-clock power as the sector shifts from energy to dispatchability."
