Adani commissions India’s first off-grid green hydrogen plant in Gujarat

Adani New Industries has commissioned India’s first off-grid green hydrogen pilot plant with a capacity of 5 MW in Kutch, Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL), has successfully commissioned India’s first off-grid green hydrogen pilot plant with a capacity of 5 megawatts (MW) in Kutch, Gujarat. The plant operates entirely on solar power and integrates a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), making it capable of running independently from the grid — a first in India’s clean energy landscape.

“This represents a new paradigm in decentralised, renewable-powered hydrogen production,” the company said, highlighting the facility’s off-grid design and solar integration.

Demonstrates real-time RE integration for industrial hydrogen production

The plant features a fully automated, closed-loop electrolyzer system that can dynamically respond to fluctuations in renewable energy inputs. This technical configuration allows the facility to maintain high efficiency, safety, and performance, while tackling the inherent variability of solar energy — a significant operational advantage in green hydrogen production.

A benchmark for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors

According to the company, the pilot project sets a precedent for industrial-scale green hydrogen solutions powered entirely by renewable sources. The hydrogen produced can be used in high-emission sectors such as fertiliser manufacturing, oil refining, and heavy transportation. These sectors are considered "hard-to-abate" due to their high dependence on fossil fuels and process-related emissions.

Part of larger green hydrogen ambitions in Mundra

The pilot plant also serves as a proof of concept for ANIL’s upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub in Mundra, Gujarat, said the company. The larger project is expected to play a critical role in India’s transition to a low-carbon economy and support global decarbonisation goals. It reinforces the Adani Group’s long-term strategy to lead in the green hydrogen economy through technological innovation and infrastructure leadership, said the statement.

The initiative aligns with the government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), which aims to reduce the country's dependence on imported fossil fuels, boost self-reliance, and accelerate the decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries. The plant also contributes to the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by localising clean energy solutions and building domestic capacity in future-ready sectors.
