NTPC Green bags 70,000 MTPA green ammonia capacity from SECI; stock reacts as firm advances clean energy, hydrogen goals

EW Bureau

New Delhi: NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), has secured a green ammonia production capacity of 70,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) in an e-reverse auction conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).

The capacity will be used to supply green ammonia to Krishana Phoschem Limited at Meghnagar, Madhya Pradesh. NTPC REL emerged as the successful bidder for the entire quantity offered in the auction, at a discovered price of Rs 51.80 per kg, the company said in a stock exchange filing dated August 4, 2025.

This award is part of SECI’s larger tender for 7.24 lakh MTPA of green ammonia across 13 locations in the country.

The development aligns with NTPC’s broader clean energy goals. The company aims to install 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, of which 5 GW is intended to support the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia. Green ammonia is produced by combining green hydrogen — derived from renewable-powered electrolysis — with nitrogen.

Following the announcement, shares of NTPC Green Energy opened at Rs 105.71 on Tuesday. The stock touched a high of Rs 105.94 before declining to Rs 105 during intraday trade.

JV project partially commissioned

In a separate disclosure, NGEL informed exchanges that a 75 MW block (Lot-5) of the 500 MW solar project being developed by IRCON Renewable Power Limited (IRPL) has achieved commercial operation from midnight on August 6, 2025.

IRPL is a joint venture of Ayana Renewable Power Pvt. Ltd., which in turn is a wholly owned subsidiary of ONGC NTPC Green Private Limited — a joint venture between NTPC Green Energy and ONGC. This marks cumulative commissioning of 300 MW out of the total planned 500 MW capacity at the site.
