Jaipur: Rajasthan’s power distribution companies (DISCOMs) are preparing to introduce decentralised battery energy storage systems to capture excess solar generation and use it more effectively. The proposed systems will be installed in areas where surplus power is being generated under the PM-KUSUM scheme and rooftop solar installations, with the objective of supporting supply during morning and evening peak demand periods.

Rajasthan’s Energy Minister Hiralal Nagar, during a review of discom performance at Vidyut Bhawan, instructed officials to expedite the rollout of the initiative as a pilot project. He said expanding storage capacity is essential for improving electricity supply and moving the state towards greater self-reliance in the energy sector.
Energy Secretary and Discoms Chairperson Aarti Dogra said that Jaipur, Jodhpur and Ajmer discoms will take up development of standalone decentralised battery energy storage systems. The aim is to ensure optimal utilisation of solar power being generated across the state.
The minister also reviewed progress under the Centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), particularly in smart metering. Officials said over 3.781 million smart meters have been installed so far, with the system helping improve billing accuracy for consumers. He also emphasised the need for further efforts to reduce transmission and commercial losses.
Officials said 179 new 33 kV grid substations have been commissioned under RDSS to address voltage-related issues. In addition, around 60 percent of feeders have been segregated, a measure aimed at reducing tripping and improving load balancing.

The review meeting also assessed power supply arrangements for the summer season, focusing on readiness to manage higher demand levels.
The storage initiative, along with infrastructure upgrades and metering reforms, forms part of the state’s broader effort to improve power distribution performance.
