IEW 2026: Multi-fuel approach key to India’s energy transition, says SIAM ED

India’s mobility transition must follow a multi-fuel, multi-powertrain path, a senior SIAM official said at IEW 2026, citing energy security and affordability needs

Quitol (Goa): India’s mobility transition cannot rely on a single technology pathway and must instead advance multiple fuels and powertrains in parallel, a senior official from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said on Friday. Commenting on SIAM’s participation at India Energy Week (IEW) 2026, Prashant K Banerjee, Executive Director, SIAM, said the scale and diversity of India’s transport needs require a balanced approach.

“India’s mobility transition cannot be driven by a single solution. Given our scale, diversity and energy priorities, a multi-fuel and multi-powertrain approach is essential,” Banerjee said, adding that electric mobility, biofuels, gas, hydrogen and cleaner internal combustion engine technologies must progress in parallel to balance energy security, air quality, affordability and self-reliance.

Sustainable mobility pavilion at IEW 2026

SIAM showcased the Indian automobile industry’s progress on sustainable mobility through a dedicated Sustainable Mobility Pavilion at the fourth edition of IEW 2026, held from January 27 to 30 at the ONGC Advanced Training Institute in Goa.

The pavilion, located in Hall No. 3, was visited by Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, and featured future-ready mobility solutions aligned with India’s decarbonisation goals.

Electric, gas, hydrogen and biofuels on display

According to SIAM, the pavilion displayed 16 production-ready vehicles and advanced technologies spanning electric, gas, hydrogen and biofuel-based powertrains, highlighting the industry’s efforts to reduce emissions while supporting India’s evolving energy mix.

Participating original equipment manufacturers included Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, TVS Motor Company, Bajaj Auto, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, Kia India, Switch Mobility Automotive Ltd, and Suzuki Motorcycle India.

Auto industry role in energy transition

SIAM said its participation at IEW 2026 underscored the Indian automobile industry’s role in supporting India’s long-term energy transition, particularly in accelerating cleaner and more efficient mobility solutions.
