Adani Group to invest Rs 63,000 cr in thermal project & PSP in Assam

Adani Group will invest about Rs 63,000 crore in Assam for a 3,200 MW thermal plant and 2,700 MW pumped-storage project

EW Bureau

New Delhi: The Adani Group announced on Friday that two of its portfolio companies have received Letters of Award (LoAs) from the Assam government for two large-scale energy projects that together entail an investment of around Rs 63,000 crore in the state. In a statement, the group said Adani Power Ltd (APL) will invest about Rs 48,000 crore to develop a 3,200 MW greenfield ultra-super-critical thermal power plant, while Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) intends to invest around Rs 15,000 crore in two pumped-storage projects (PSPs) with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW.

Through two separate regulatory filings, AGEL informed the bourses on Friday that it has received an LoA for 500 MW of energy-storage capacity, which will be catered from these PSPs, while Adani Power Limited said that it has received an LoA from APDCL for the supply of power from the 3,200 MW (4X800 MW) greenfield ultra-super-critical thermal power plant to be developed in Assam.

The group said the two projects together are expected to provide employment to around 30,000 people during the construction phase and represent the highest-ever private sector investment in the North-East.

Gautam Adani: The North-East is emerging as a vital frontier

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani said the projects reinforce the group’s commitment to the development of India’s northeastern region. “The North-East is emerging as a vital frontier in India’s growth story,” he said. “We are proud to contribute to its transformation. Our 3,200 MW thermal power project and 2,700 MW PSP projects in Assam collectively represent not only the largest private sector investment in the region but also firm steps toward energy security, industrial development and job creation. These projects will not only energise Assam but also catalyse progress across the entire northeastern corridor. We are honoured to contribute to Assam and the entire northeast’s progress and look forward to building partnerships that uplift local communities and drive India’s energy transformation.”

The statement said the investments are aligned with Gautam Adani’s commitment made in February this year to invest Rs 50,000 crore in the North-East’s development.

Thermal power project to be built under DBFOO model

Adani Power emerged as the lowest bidder for the thermal project, offering a tariff of Rs 6.30 per kWh in a competitive bidding process. The project will be implemented under the Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate (DBFOO) model. The statement added that coal linkage for the plant has been allocated under the government’s SHAKTI policy.

The company said the project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment for around 20,000 to 25,000 people during construction, and sustain approximately 3,500 jobs during operations. The plant will be commissioned in phases from December 2030.

Adani Power said the ultra-super-critical plant will set new benchmarks in environmental stewardship by leveraging modern technology to minimise emissions and maximise efficiency. The company has secured the necessary approvals from the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission, and a Power Supply Agreement with APDCL is expected to be executed in due course.

APL is currently implementing India’s largest private-sector capex programme to support rising baseload demand. It operates 18.15 GW from 12 thermal plants and one solar facility and aims to reach about 42 GW by 2031-32.

Pumped-storage projects to support grid stability

Adani Green Energy also emerged as the lowest bidder for 500 MW of energy-storage capacity linked to its proposed pumped-storage projects in the state. The company said the PSPs will deploy advanced storage technologies to strengthen grid stability, manage peak-time demand and support the integration of renewable energy into Assam’s grid.

According to the statement, the projects will play a “crucial role” in enabling a resilient, sustainable electricity supply and in advancing Assam’s clean-energy transition.
