NTPC targets 244 GW by 2037, lines up Rs 16.86 lakh cr capex across the energy value chain

Chairman Gurdeep Singh tells 50th AGM that NTPC now aims for 149 GW by 2032 and 244 GW by 2037, backed by one of India's largest capex plans

New Delhi: NTPC has set out a build-out plan that would take it from around 91 GW today to 244 GW of operating capacity by 2037, supported by cumulative capital expenditure of about Rs 16.86 lakh crore. Chairman Gurdeep Singh laid out the plan on Thursday while addressing shareholders at the company's 50th Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The coming 10 years, Singh said, will rank among the most significant growth phases in NTPC's history. India's demand for electricity will keep climbing as the economy expands and living standards rise, he said, and the make-up of the power system will shift quickly at the same time.

Capacity target raised

"We have raised our long-term capacity ambitions and now target generating capacity of 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW of renewable energy, with an aspiration to reach 244 GW by 2037 excluding storage," Singh said.

The spending envelope runs to roughly Rs 16.86 lakh crore up to FY37 and spans thermal, hydro and pumped storage, renewables, battery storage, mining and nuclear. Singh described it as among the largest investment programmes any Indian power utility has taken on.

Beyond generation

Adding megawatts is only part of what NTPC is doing, the chairman said. The company is simultaneously building capability across the whole energy value chain.

Nuclear sits high on that list. Singh identified it as one of the most important areas for NTPC's future growth, with the company seeking a 30 percent share of the government's 100 GW nuclear target for 2047 under the Nuclear Energy Mission.

Thirty-four more nuclear sites under study

NTPC is already developing a 2.8 GW nuclear project in Rajasthan through a joint venture with NPCIL, and now wants to take up projects on its own as well.

"Studies and discussions are progressing for an additional 34 sites in 13 states (for nuclear projects) and technologies," Singh said.

Nuclear generation will work alongside both renewables and thermal, he said, supplying dependable, low-carbon power around the clock.

Coal gasification project on track

Singh also reported progress on NTPC's Coal Gasification-based Synthetic Natural Gas Project.

"We are also progressing well with a capacity of 5.75 lakh tonnes per annum. Once established, this will be the first plant of its kind in India and will directly substitute imported natural gas," he said.
