NGEL to set up green hydrogen fuelling station at VOC Port under new MoU

NGEL signs MoU with VOC Port Authority to set up hydrogen fuelling station, marking a push for green hydrogen mobility at the port

New Delhi: NGEL, a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) on September 5 in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, the company said in a statement.

The MoU was exchanged between Kishore Kumar Hota, Chief General Manager of NTPC, and A. Ganesan, Chief Mechanical Engineer of VOCPA, in the presence of Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, Tamil Nadu Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Geeta Jeevan, MLA Nainar Nagendran, Ports Secretary T K Ramachandran, VOCPA Chairman Susanta Kumar Purohit and senior officials from the Tamil Nadu government, NTPC and VOCPA.

Hydrogen fuelling station at VOC Port

According to the statement, “NGEL will set up a green hydrogen fuelling station in VOC Port along with hydrogen-based internal combustion engine trucks for the port operation. This will open an option for phasing out fossil fuel trucks in favour of clean and green fuels, bringing decarbonisation and energy security.”

Broader green hydrogen push

The company noted that NTPC has already been implementing similar projects across India. “NTPC is successfully operating the green hydrogen blending project at Surat, Gujarat, for over two years and has already taken similar mobility initiatives at Leh, Ladakh, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, Bhubaneswar, Odisha and Kandla Port, Gujarat,” the statement said.

Further, NGEL is developing a green hydrogen hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The company aims to reach 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 with integrated energy storage solutions, the statement added.
